Open source software and platforms are experiencing explosive growth in the public sector and beyond. In the last 5 years, the Linux Foundation increased membership by 432 percent, while there has been more than $57 billion of value creation in open source mergers and acquisitions, and initial public offerings. In addition, the Office of Management and Budget released the Federal Source Code Policy in 2016 mandating all agencies release at least 20 percent of their new, custom-developed source code as open source software.
Booz Allen is leading the way among system integrators in this open source boom. As an “open technology” provider, we’re not just talking about collaborating openly with industry leaders and our government clients. We’re actively doing it. To support our clients and enable rapid use of open source software by our government clients, we established the Booz Allen Public License. This new license makes it easier for agencies to adopt open source and better protect assets and intellectual property. Rather than choosing among many different licenses, government clients can use ours without republishing code modifications while maintaining compliance with federal acquisition regulations.
