Booz Allen is committed to helping federal agencies and other organizations adopt artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly, securely, and confidently. These efforts include our long-term research on critical AI issues, the development of AI governance, AI security, and responsible AI solutions, and our investments in promising technology startups.
Building on this commitment, we are excited to join many of the nation’s leading AI stakeholders in participating in a recently announced Department of Commerce initiative supporting the development and deployment of trustworthy and safe AI. Established by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) will bring together AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations to meet this mission.
We applaud the NIST AI Safety Institute’s efforts to ensure this technology is a force for good in the U.S. and the world at large. We look forward to bringing our expertise in national security, generative AI, and adversarial machine learning to help inform the U.S. government on this important issue.
The consortium’s members—representing the nation’s largest companies, innovative startups, and the creators of the world’s most advanced AI systems and hardware—are on the frontlines of developing and using AI systems. The group, which counts OpenAI, Google, and Amazon among its members, also includes several civil society and academic teams building the foundational understanding of how AI can and will transform our society. The full list of participants can be found here.
Booz Allen will initially support Working Group #3 – Capability Evaluations, Working Group #4 – AI Red-Teaming, and Working Group #5 – Safety & Security, contributing research and insight for each topic area. Collaborating with other consortium members, we hope to develop frameworks and guidance for mitigating potential risks and providing additional safeguards to allow AI to be used confidently and securely.
Our engagement with AISIC builds on our work to establish norms and best practices for trustworthy AI development through a variety of channels, including our participation in the Center for a New American Security’s AI Governance Forum and our CEO Horacio Rozanski joining in U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s AI Insight Forum.
