As part of our overriding commitment to helping clients create trustworthy and safe AI systems, I am excited to share that Booz Allen recently joined the Responsible AI (RAI) Institute. Working with the RAI Institute will give us access to leading assessments, benchmarks, and certifications that are closely aligned with global standards and emerging regulations, strengthening our ability to help clients build, implement, and sustain responsible AI practices.
Founded in 2016, the RAI Institute is a global, member-driven nonprofit whose membership includes leaders from the AI sector, leading businesses, think tanks, academia, and government agencies. It has used this collective insight to establish itself as a leader in defining and codifying benchmarks and assessments for building enterprise competencies enabling responsible AI. It also offers practical, actionable advice for strategists, practitioners, policymakers, and regulators focused on ensuring that AI technologies serve the public good.
As AI becomes more pervasive across the public sector, it becomes more critical for organizations to quickly comply with shifting regulations and maintain the public’s trust. However, these organizations may be unsure of how to implement the many different statements of ethical AI principles that third parties have released. Booz Allen and the RAI Institute provide the independent benchmarking federal agencies urgently need to improve transparency, reduce ethical risk, and build stakeholder trust, all of which are essential for operationalizing AI capabilities for mission impact.
As the number-one provider of AI services to the federal government, Booz Allen brings unique insight for implementing responsible AI strategies with agencies across the defense, civil, and national security sectors. From research into AI risk and value; to the development of AI governance, AI security, and responsible AI solutions; to our venture partnerships with AI innovators, including Credo.AI, another RAI Institute member, we consistently act on our commitment to making AI a force for good in the United States and worldwide.
Joining the Institute enables us to expand our offering with its broad suite of AI assessments—including organizational maturity, vendor risk, and system-level analyses—that all map to the National Institute of Standards and Technology AI Risk Management Framework. Building on the Institute’s work, we can equip organizations and teams with accredited conformity assessments that align AI systems with regulations, internal organizational policies, and recognized best practices and key principles for responsible AI. Furthermore, membership will help our responsible AI leaders collaborate with global peers and contribute directly to the broader ecosystem through initiatives led by the Institute.
Public- and private-sector leaders need to be confident that their AI systems are responsible and safe. Ensuring that these powerful but complex systems operate as intended means implementing measures to assess and systematically eliminate risk. Our membership in this and similar organizations, such as the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium, advances our ability to help clients field AI systems that fully incorporate ethical measures and make a positive impact on people, their communities, and the world.
